Current mood: amused

Hee hee hee!
One of the patients recuperating (I think from a hip injury) at our facility tends to be very disoriented. She will flag aides down, and once the aide is by her side she will ask, “what am I supposed to be doing?” or sometimes, “where am I?” I’m not entirely convinced that she is really this disoriented; it may be that she has word-finding issues and this is just a catch-phrase that she uses to express her distress. There’s no way for me to be sure.

At one point during the day, I was taking this woman to use the toilet. It was a little frustrating because when I would be trying to get her out of her wheelchair and onto the toilet, she would stop and ask, “what am I doing?” Thankfully, she wasn’t very heavy or this would have been hard on my back. I tried to be patient with her, though. When she would ask what was happening I would always respond with an honest answer like, “we’re standing up to get to the toilet,” or “we’re sitting down on the toilet.”

When I was transferring her back from the toilet to her wheelchair, she once again demanded to know what we were doing. I responded by telling her, “we’re parking your rump in this chair right here!” To this, she looked up at me and ingenuously asked, “both cheeks?”

LOL!

Sounds as though at least part of this woman is "all there" and delightfully impish. It's wonderful that you can find the good and bright moments in the middle of lots of not good stuff.

Hugs and wishes for your continued passage through this phase to better things...

Sometimes, when dealing with my Mom, I got the feeling she wasn't as "out of it" as she acted. ;)
